Increasing Reports of Common Phone Scam in Wilbraham WILBRAHAM (WGGB) — Wilbraham Police are getting the word out about an increasingly common phone scam. Their department has received several reports of these scams, through which criminals hope to get money from the target through elaborate stories. The caller will often state that your relative is in trouble and that you need to wire money to ensure their safe return. While the fabricated circumstances vary, Wilbraham Police say some have included claims that a relative is being held at gun-point and is in immediate danger if the money is not sent. While this scam often targets elderly residents, it can happen to anyone. The callers also use so-called “spoofed” numbers, which cause a local phone number to show up on a caller ID. However, that number is no the same as the number being used to make the call. If you are targeted, police recommend you get as much information as possible from the caller, then hang up and call the police. Wilbraham Police say that if you are concerned about a loved one’s safety, they will investigate further and help confirm that they are safe.
