Incredibly, one year ago today we announced the launch of the Barts Bash race here. The ticking hand of time has circled at a hectic pace ever since and who would have thought that the day itself was almost three months ago... Wowzers! In the first week alone more than 100 clubs signed up to race and we didnt need Carol Vordermans maths to help us realise that it was going to build to be a bit of a monster. A leviathon from the deep was rising and on September 21st you all truly delivered. Think Godzilla and Godzuki meet the Loch Ness Monster while having a quiet beer with the Yeti and Beowulf.... Bonkers, epic and truly BOSH-tastic. Most likely, you were a part of the event: a participant, a volunteer, a witness, a parent or a fundraiser. Well, hats off to you if you were, and huge, unconditional hugs for being one piece of the global jigsaw puzzle in honour of Bart and the wonder of sailing. Today, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation unveiled the prize winners, the total raised and their plans for the future. Their film accompanies this post. Today is Andys birthday. Its the reason we chose to announce the race on this date last year and its a day where we can particularly celebrate and remember our friend - this great man who still inspires us. Last year we asked you to sign up to Barts Bash for Andys birthday, but the Year 2 sign up is coming later next year, so what can you do instead? Well, apart from watching the film attached, we know that many of you have memories of last September 21st - the day you raced in the largest sailing race in the world. My memory is of being in my first ever sailing race, my family coming out to observe their first sailing race, two of them trying out new watersports and the atmosphere that seemed to flow from land to water, from inside to out, from person to person. Bart was among us and his spirit carried everyone - I know that was the case where I was, but I also know that it was the same around the world. Bart was everywhere and from what we have heard he changed the global atmosphere of sailing for a day. Pretty impressive apples for one man to deliver... We havent asked you to contribute to The Bart Project for a while, but today seems like a fitting moment to ask you to take a moment to share your memories or photos of the day. Go to thebartproject and add a memory or some photos to the collection. Everything you post will be collated and kept to enable Freddie and Hamish to know and understand their Dads impact and legacy even more as they grow up. Please have a little pause in your day to reminisce about last September 21st and share it with us. What did it mean to you? Why was it special? How did you honour the great man? Write it down and send it to us through the Bart Project website, hopefully we can share some stories on here so that we can extend that global connection that Bart has given us. You may not have had something to share with the Project before, but we know that over 30,000 people do now!! Happy Birthday Andy. Sail on Bart. We miss you buddy, but we all remember you in a way that puts a smile on our face, a spring in our step and wind in our sails. We sailed as a global community in your name, and we have stories to tell - we just need you, The Bart Project followers, to please send them in... Thank you. youtu.be/oqRin0VNDeY
