Index – Read and weep, it’s so gorgeous. Start to use it, weep some more. I debated answering Jessica Lavicky in her own thread, but this seemed like a good learning opportunity. The link below connects to the baptismal “L” page, image 45. The earliest entry is 1627. This index was created in 1934 by Karel Janicek. actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/7347/?strana=45 But turn the page to image 46. It starts with Liska, Anna in 1656. But a little further down the list is Lavicky, Dorota in 1655. If you continue looking down the page, the years are wildly out of order. But the page numbers aren’t. What is going on? (Hint: if you were to look at a larger set, such as “K”, you might see the pattern more quickly.) So let’s find 1652 Lavicky Marianna from the village of Lavicky (!) on page 507. That would be in signatura 16442. There are gaps in the page numbering, so you can’t do anything easy like dividing by 2 to get near the page. It’s image 209. Do you see anything odd about the names on that page? Go to image 199 and test your hypothesis. actapublica.eu/matriky/brno/prohlizec/7304/?strana=209
