India’s Tamil Nadu to get four new handloom clusters The South Indian state of Tamil Nadu would be getting four new handloom clusters in various districts which would be established with an investment of Rs. 5.4 million, granted by the state and the Central Governments. The handloom clusters would be set up at Arni in Turvannamalai district, Pallavar and Varadharaja in Kancheepuram district and Rasipuram in Tiruchengode district of the state, reports the Deccan Chronicle. The state government had already earmarked funds for the establishment of the handloom clusters but it had to await the contribution from the Central Government. The Central Government recently granted Rs. 4.57 million for the project and the state government sanctioned its share of Rs 836,000 for the execution of developing these handloom clusters. The handloom clusters are being set up to enhance livelihood opportunities in the districts and promote the handloom products from these districts in traditional markets as well as to source new markets. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Textiles is planning to establish a zari and embroidery handicraft cluster in Kulithalai located in the Karur district of the state. In May this year, the state government of Tamil Nadu introduced a scheme to construct 10,000 green houses for weavers working in the handloom sector of the state and provide motorized spindles to them, in order to cater to the housing needs of domestic weavers, as well as helping them with mechanization of their workplace.
