Indie Pop // Cathedrals, a mysterious male/female duo hailing from San Frisco emerge silently but with notable force. Unbound was their debut single, introducing themselves as a raw, instrumental entity with a dark pop aftertaste. The spirited female vocals provide the real charm, reminding us of the likes of The xx, Phoria and Beach House, while the instrumentation proves reminiscent of what would be SOHN and Grizzly Bears lovechild. Unbound explores the dualities not only between organic and electronic additives, but also between their difference in gender. The track dives into the depths of emotional spaciousness, setting the tone from the very first pick of the guitar to the very last hip-hop inspired beat. The structure is an exploratory process with electronic undertones, encouraging listeners to interpret each and every lyric (e.g. Ill nurse you back to pieces) in their own personal context. Theres something about Unbound that stirs up a lot of excitement about the undiscovered twosome. Maybe its the layered harmonic qualities or CATHEDRALS interesting approach to creating ample sonic mood.
