Indigenous People - Press Conference, 21 Oct 2013, Mr. Anaya, - TopicsExpress

Indigenous People - Press Conference, 21 Oct 2013, Mr. Anaya, who is presenting his report to the General Assemblys Third Committee, is expected to discuss his recently completed two-week fact finding mission to Canada, as well as follow up on reports made earlier this year on Namibia, El Salvador, extractive industries, and the situation of indigenous peoples in Asia -- a region where most countries do not recognize the term “indigenous” while there remain millions of people who continue to practice traditional livelihoods, speak different languages and remain marginalized from mainstream societies. The Members of the Permanent Forum and the Special Rapporteur are also at UN Headquarters to prepare for next year’s High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly, to be known as the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, which provides a unique opportunity to address the situation of indigenous peoples, who continue to suffer human rights violations as well as high poverty rates, low educational outcomes and poor access to healthcare. The World Conference will address themes such as self determination, indigenous peoples’ own visions for development and the post-2015 development agenda. It will also be an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of a full and effective implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
