Indonesia Air Pollution Facts Air pollution is a major environmental risk to health. By reducing air pollution levels, you can reduce the risk of respiratory infections, heart disease, and lung cancer. Population concentration, drastic increase in traffic volume and exhaust emission from motor vehicles and industries are the main causes for air pollution in Indonesia. Correlation Between Motor Vehicle Emission And Public Health: The levels of PM2.5 in Jakarta far exceed the WHO annual guidelines. In Jakarta, the contribution of anthropogenic aerosols dominate the PM2.5 composition, consistent with high open burning emissions of the region. Other PM2.5 sources such as construction dust also contribute significantly to Jakartas air pollution. Automobile emissions contribute 70% of air pollution in large cities in Indonesia, while the rest come from industrial sources. (Source: Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies). Asian Aerosols: Current and Year 2030 Distributions and Implications to Human Health and Regional Climate Change: In 2011, the levels of Particulate Matter (PM10), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in Jakarta rose by between 40% and 85% or 3 times the limits set by the World Health Organization. The greatest effect on health is PM2.5, very fine Particulate Matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter. PM2.5 penetrate deeply into the lungs and enter the blood stream. None of the existing air monitoring station in Indonesia has the capability to measure PM2.5. (Source: Earth Justice Org).
