Inequality is 2014s villain of the year. Its been the target of those seeking to expand government redistribution of wealth and income, and were reminded of its association with the civil rights and feminist movements. But in reality, inequality is widely celebrated, and even promoted, in America and the world. Academic inequality is largely praised. The valedictorian address is delivered, to applause, by the best scholar in the class. It is perfectly acceptable to boast that you are in the academic top 1%. Newspapers regularly publish lists of the best students. Fitness inequality is acceptable. We show off our bodies, and are praised for the hard work and self-discipline to took to reach that level. Likewise, those who are fit arent asked to gain weight just so there will be less fitness inequality. Sports is all about being unequal. Being better than your opponents is applauded, being worse is booed. Indeed, inequality is the goal of athletic competition, with those who are the best showered with millions in salary and endorsements, regardless of whether they earned that talent or were born with it. Economic inequality is actually the goal of education and job training. If nobody learned anything, wed all be equally stupid. But by working and trying harder than other people, we increase our chances of getting that prime job, and decrease the chance that our competitor will. Beauty is a huge, and some would say unfair, advantage to those who possess it. Yet we dont force those who were born with natural good looks to ugly themselves up to help those who werent that lucky. Yet we burn the rich in effigy, tax them more than anyone else, and routinely vilify their success, whether earned or not. Well pretty much justify any excuse to take money from others, including the reduction of inequality.
