Infertility on the rise in Valley ‘20% couples suffering, 2-3 cases everyday’ Srinagar: In a major concern, the cases of infertility among valley men and women is on rise with experts saying it has increased up to 20 percent. Experts said that 15-20 percent couples are going through infertility related disorders while females are said to be outnumbering men.As per the study about 20% couples are said to be going through the infertility related disorders. It includes nearly about 60 % women and 40% men, said Professor Shameema Parveen, Head of the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Sher-i- Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS). She said that the infertility related disorders is alarmingly increasing in valley adding that 2-3 cases of infertility are detected daily in the O. P. D in hospitals.Prof. Parveen said that the valley also lacks the infertility centers due to which the exact statistics of infertility is not known.Due to the lack of infertility centers here in Kashmir, we treat these patients in hospital OPD, she said. Further the studies at the SKIMS indicate 15.7 per cent women at childbearing age will never have an offspring without clinical intervention. A further 14 per cent of women are unable to conceive because of unknown medical conditions. Prof. Parveen said that Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS),endometriosis, and pelvic tuberculosis are some of the diseases which are detected mostly among the female patients. She cites that the late marriage among valley men and women as the main reason for rising infertility cases in Kashmir. About 80 percent of the Kashmiris are not financially sound due to which their children marry in their late ages. Most of the patients which I have received so far have married in their late 30s. Mostly females develop many problems due to which they are not able to conceive without clinical intervention. The best age for the marriage is between24 to 30, Prof Parveen said. Experts also blame the change in the life style as one of the reason for the growing infertility related disorders in Kashmir. The changing life style has contributed a lot to different types of disorders in the world. In Kashmir people are consuming unhealthy, spicy diet which can prove to be one of the factor for infertility related disorder. Further lack of proper exercising and hormonal imbalance also are few of the factors, said Dr Muhammad Ashraf Kar,another Gynecologist.
