Information: My take and notes from the FWC meeting that I just attended: FYI for anyone who holds a Class I or II Captive Wildlife License or owns a hybrid in the state of FL. My apologies to friends and relatives who this does not impact, but Im going to blog a bit here in order to share info, and to organize that info in my own head. Please note that this is my perceptions of the meeting. I hope not to ramble too much: If you dont want to continue reading, ad-nauseum, the jest is that there will be 7 more public workshops throughout the state to allow for public input on captive wildlife rules. Input via electronic means is also available. Our FWC contacts are: Capt Kara Hooker at (850) 488-6253 and Major Ron Cave (850) 717-2116 or (850) 251-0409 (cel) Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Division of Law Enforcement Captive Wildlife Office 620 South Meridian St. Tallahassee, FL 32399 myfwc/license/captive-wildlife/ The meetings will begin in Dec and go thru 2015 in Panama City, Orlando, Naples, Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa and West Palm From what I learned, the part of the meeting that was of concern to exotic animal owners , fell under the Wildlife Best Management Practices (BMPS) heading. From what I gather, the state has changed or wants to change the way that Captive Wildlife Licenses are handled in that they have to be in one persons name. Therefore, in the case of, say a husband and wife, or partnership who own and manage a wildlife preserve or zoo, and the one who holds that license either retires or dies, the remaining partner can not continue operations under that license, but must apply for another. In this way, all partners have to pay for and hold their own licenses in order to continue operations, should something happen to one... (More $ for the state) During the 7 meetings held around the state, the rules and regulations for Captive Wildlife will be re-examined and updated. If I owned a Genesis generation for creating hybrid cats, this would be very important to me. hint, hint... They are also looking at limiting the number of licenses and making them harder to get. Other subjects that will be discussed will be types of enclosures, land needed.... There will be a list of subjects, so I would really be vigilant of the FWC site. The FWC does not at this time, say that they are looking directly at prohibiting hybrid cats, but as we all know, this is a very slippery slope. Also, loss of the Genesis generation of Savannahs, Bengals and Chausies in Florida, will eventually lead to F1s, then F2s and then the dominoes fall...As it has in several other states. Personally, I think that we hybrid owners need to get ourselves organized and informed. The Captive Wildlife people have something of a network, and seem open to including us. In addition, I think it wise for us to share information on Save Our Savannahs and Save Our Hybrid Derived Domestic Cats We can help each other out with transportation to these meetings and overnight stays where necessary as well.
