Inspired by the recent discoveries of more womens homes near Tuam, this poem goes out there to honour all women everywhere. There is a link here to offer some support to this cause. These women or their children should not be forgotten (and the Irish government/any religious order in Ireland is not going to care about remembering them) Any constructive criticism related to the poem appreciate. Im going to work on it during a poetry workshop this weekend, thanks :) irishcentral/opinion/cahirodoherty/Galway-historian-reveals-truth-behind-800-orphans-in-mass-grave.html Fallen Woman. Do I look like I want to be controlled? I’m sorry, I think you mistook me for the doormat that is actually at your feet. That is for wiping your dirty shoes on. I’m a woman. I ask nothing more or less than to be respected, cherished and the truth of me honored. Did you label me a fallen woman? Did you just look into my eyes, size up my beautiful and sacred body, judge the way I behaved and then decide that somehow you had the right to negate my very existence? Did you decide to lock me away from the world? Take away my light, take away my liberty, distort my appearance, make me wash your dirty laundry to fill me with your shame? Did you look into my child’s eyes and decide to negate his existence too? Did your frozen gaze lead my child to feel disconnected from the beauty and truth of who he truly was? Did your lack of care, affection and kindness, your judgment upon him, your mistreatment of him kill him as cruelly as any of those who have died at war? Did Christ truly tell you to do that? Christ who cherished all and judged no one Whose subversive message was none other than to be love? I’m confused....my Christ seems different to yours. I know a loving Christ. Perhaps one day I can introduce your Christ to mine and we can embrace each other in a field beyond judgment and dance. Until then I will be held and loved warmly by my Christ, knowing that he loves me as I am and that your actions are not his. He values sincerity not lies, equality not power and his message is for all of us. Your distortions cannot change that. Nothing you do to me can take away the beauty of my soul for I am love. I am not an Aishling vision. I’m not a Catlin Ni Houlihan. I’m not a virgin, a whore a martyr or a mother. I’m an infinite being. I’m not a woman to be judged or labeled in anyway or to be used by anyone; you can keep your labels, judgements and projections for yourself. I’m a full-bodied, full-blooded Irish woman. I’m an individual, a multi-faceted woman of passion and beauty here to embrace the joy and miracle of life. That is my god given right. Labels are for bins not people. Let labels and judgments be a thing of Irelands dark past. Let women in Ireland and everywhere stand up to embrace their present and their presence. Let us claim the respect that we deserve and honor ourselves as the beautiful beings that we are. Let us say never again, never again, never again. Our bodies, our lives and our choices belong to us and to no one else. Let us step out of the moulds forged for us by the politics of this country to embrace and support who we all truly are as individuals. Let us dance with our difference, cherish and support our uniqueness. Let the atrocities of the past be a thing of the past. Let us not forget or deny them but learn to let them go and hold their important message that should never be forgotten deep in our hearts. We all deserve to be respected and loved. Let us claim that respect for ourselves and ask of ourselves that we give that respect to others without judgment. Let love, light and self-empowerment pave the way forward for all women everywhere. Don’t just commemorate me, celebrate me in the joy of all women and dare to discover the mystery of who I truly am.
