Installment #2 on Food: OK so we got some interest regarding my brief on Food. Thanks for all the emails and comments. Since food is so central to our lives, it bears some scrutiny. As I began looking into alternatives for food supply on long duration flights I had to consider how Astronauts would live on something other than freeze dried foods all the time. We know this from our studies on ISS, but it really requires some thinking when we talk about 1.5 years aboard a spacecraft for a Mars trip (round trip). Certainly preservatives are important, refridgeration, etc. Plus how the body defeats radiation and nutrient requirements like bone structure support, etc. So I looked at common unprepared foods that we could take ( fruits, veggies, etc.) as well as combinations of prepared foods. Since our taste buds definately change in space...it takes some creative thinking. The alarming part is what we find in foods that really cause problems in space, but are not very good at all for you here on the ground.
