Tuesday, October 29, 2013 15% and Growing: The Civic Engagement of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in California Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are the fastest growing racial group in California and the most heavily immigrant racial group in the state and country. Today, over 1 in 7 California residents are AAPIs – about 10% of the electorate. What are the policy priorities and preferences of this large and diverse group of Californians, particularly when it comes to health, education, and the environment? And, looking ahead to 2014 and beyond, what will it take for AAPIs to play a more central role in civic life and politics in California? The lunchtime panel and public forum on the civic engagement of AAPIs in California will feature Frank Gilliam (UCLA); Karthick Ramakrishnan (National Asian American Survey & UC Riverside); Ninez Ponce (California Health Interview Survey & UCLA); & Paul Ong (Center for the Study of Inequality & UCLA). Robert Teranishi (UCLA) will be also be a part of the lunchtime panel and John Kobara (California Community Foundation) will join the speakers for the public forum.
