Interesting. I dont think we have even scratched the surface of what exactly went on during the late Celtic early Roman period. If you take the British Empire model, or the British and French during French and Indian Wars, the Romans no doubt exploited the factionalism and rivalries between tribes and people to gain the upper hand. They used them as auxiliary soldiers but also supported them by arming them and physically supporting their inter-tribe warfare. And their is enough evidence to support ritual cannibalism, head hunting etc being used a cultural and psychological weapon of war.
