Interesting article from the New York Times. Even if couples live together without the benefit of marriage, upon a split , courts may still have to get involved to determine custody issues for children born from this union. Likewise, if the unmarried couple owns property together, or has incurred debts together, a lawsuit may still happen for dissolution of the domestic partnership. The moral of the story ? Living together without the benefit of marriage provides no protection from legal issues arising on family matters. Living together still does not protect from money concerns. Perhaps one of the few benefits , under Tenn law, is that unmarried partners cannot collect alimony, whereas a divorcing couple may have to deal with that issue. Otherwise, child support, custody and property issues still remain as a potential source of litigation.
