Interesting comprehensive article. I cant overstate the influence of Tom Lehrer on my shtick. He knew my parents at Harvard in the 40s, and his original 10 LP and the subsequent 12 were regularly played on the phonograph (Google that gadget) when I was growing up. I learned his songs and I remember singing and playing them for my grandmothers friends in New York when I was 9 (what they made of a 9-year-old singing that racy Boy Scout song, I dont know.) My sister Nancy was an officer of John Kerrys first campaign in 1972, and Tom Lehrer entertained at a fundraiser in Lexington, MA at the house of a neighbor of ours; my parents let me come watch, and I sat on the floor a few feet away from the Maestro (his opening one-liner: Im pleased to be here to support the campaign of… whoever it is this time.) So from my earliest days, sitting at the piano and doing mordant ditties was just the natural order of things.
