Interesting....one of the hardest points to convey to my clients is that insurance is a very unemotional industry....numbers, and only numbers, rule the day. And with that I see interesting things all the time that give people a lower or higher rate depending on answers to different questions (often in a counter intuitive manner....for those of you thinking youll go and game the system) with regard to how they line up within the actuarial tables. Anyways long story short....I just saw that this lady Im quoting gets a better rate (only by like $15 p/ 6 months...but still the fact that it changes at all) because she is divorced as opposed to simply being single. Furthermore if she were a widow she would get the same preferred rate as she does being divorced which is again better than simply being single. Id love to see the actuarial tables on this, but apparently divorced/widowed women are statistically safer drivers than single women of the same age, in the same state, with the same driving record, etc. I would think if anything they might have a little more rage behind the wheel (although thats a poor joke regarding those who are widows). I wonder if its because there is a higher likelihood that they have children (which one would think would make someone drive a little safer) and somehow the numbers show they have a lower accident frequency or something to that effect. Just remember consumers: its all about the numbers and if you have a good agent they should be able to explain all the odds and ends for you. Either way thought it was interesting. #insurancedork
