Interesting point on the poppies. Radio 4 yesterday had a short discussion in which one of the guests was critical that the poppy has changed its originally symbolism. Historically after WW1 it was meant to signify the horrors of war and the waste of lives. It was an anti war symbol. However, he said its now become a symbol to sentimentalise British war past and present. A way to sure up support for British troops. He was opposed by a woman who claimed that the language of sentimentality and glory has been removed when related to war. According to her the british no longer use the words glorious death, or great sacrifice etc. However today on radio five, Nicky Campbell had a whole programme on armistice day. In it he talked about the ultimate sacrifice from those who died protecting our freedoms. Not only in ww1 and 2 but also in the 21st century. How Iraq and Afghanistan was there to protect our freedoms, nobody knows. Such language sentimentality, glorifying soldiers helps to distract the wider public from uk policies that treat the British common man as cannon fodder for corporate interests. - Brother Sharif Abu Laith
