Interesting post over on a Compassion in world Farming debate re fake meat, the environmental impact of meat consumption and veganism. Please note, Ive just copied someone elses post here. If you want to see the entire discussion, pop on over to Compassion in World farmings FB page: Carbon sequestration through animal manure is actually the most efficient way we have found to trap C02 in the soil and not have it warm up the planet. This is the work of Alan Savory at the Savory Institute and of other current initiatives in the US that study how this technique drastically reduce one of the contributor to global warming. Why did we not have this problem when billion of bisons - far more than the amount of cattle currently raised in the US - were roaming free and grazing in the prairies before the while men killed them all? Veganism and the reliance of extensive agriculture of mono crops with the pesticides they need and the apoverishment of the soil they lead to will bring us exactly in the same deadend - but with a different timescale. You can chose to not eat meat for personal reasons, but its junk science to not understand that animal grazing on the soil of grasslands dont replenish them and trap CO2 - clearly the people who think so have not done their homework. I will conceded that grassfed beef in Brazil is an heresy - over there they chop down the amazon to have beef grazing: but they do the same with soy. Grazing beef in the great plaines of the US however - that could revert back to this form of pasturing rather than extensive mono crops (the glycophosphates used on those crops are now heavily linked to cancer and the epidemics of autism) would act on global warming, on redeveloping a sustainable and solid local enomony, and provide people with better nutrient and animal with a high stander of welfare. Lets not forget that importing any food - meat or other - from a neigbhourood country also contributes to GW. We should finally not forget that we cannot stop global warming: we can only reduce the contribution made by human activities to it. The Earth had phases of warming and cooling down for million of years and will continue to do so, without us on it if needed. Our incapacity to consider that we are not essential and must adapt to the planet evolution rather than the other way around is baffling. Finally, I was vegetarian 10 years, vegan 1. Why am I not anymore? Because I dont consider myself above nature anymore, but part of it. I see animals eating each other every day to sustain their lives - from the cute birds swallowing a worm to the lamb eating insect on its grass - and they dont intellectualise it. We have a duty to avoid unnecessary suffering to other beings; we can however agree that living is killing, by the only fact of our presence, and that this a reality of the physical world. So you can choose to be vegan, but dont fool yourself into thinking that veganism is devoid of killing - animals are killed when crops are harvested. The decision that the life of a cow is more worthy than those of rodents or insects is a purely intellectual one, not a compassionate one.
