Interesting read. I see both sides on this issue as a writer with a publishing company and performer. I think the PROs ask way too much and end up discouraging live music too often. On the flip side, most of these venues dont pay artists these days, so at what point do the newcomers actually get paid for anything at all? As a writer, sometimes I make far more $ than even a musician/performer. It goes back and forth. I found out recently that I can log into BMI live and log original gigs I played and get paid and that money comes from venues like this in article. I intend to log every past show and get paid for it. One thing Ive noticed today from young artists/musicians- They are WAY TOO EAGER TO PLAY FOR FREE ALWAYS and most of the time can only blame themselves for it. They lack any courage or basic business principles. I love music , it is my everything and because I respect my skills and hard work, I ALWAYS get paid(except for rare circumstances of my choosing, like benefits/charities, etc) and that is why I do this as a profession.... One thing Ive learned is the way to make a living doing music, is believe in your skills, represent yourself and create as many income streams as possible. E.G. Writing, publishing, performing, studio work, etc. To all the performers that will automatically be angry at the PROs in this case, do you think you shouldnt be paid for performing originals as a writer, when the venue doesnt pay you your cut from revenue from the performance? Will you be ambitious enough to find out how to get a piece of those funds from whichever PRO represents you as a writer/publisher? On the flip side, I think these prices can be a little too steep and especially for a new biz in their first couple years. There should be a sliding scale in my opinion that considers some other important variables..... Please discuss, disagree with me, whatever. We should be talking about things like this.... #CoffeeTalk
