Edison finishes construction of the first motion picture studio, the Black Maria in West Orange, New Jersey. 1957 – Felix Wankels first working prototype (DKM 54) of the Wankel engine runs at the NSU research and development department Versuchsabteilung TX in Germany Todays birthday crew: 1908 – George Pal, Hungarian-American animator and producer principally associated with science fiction. He is best remembered as the producer of science fiction and fantasy films in the 1950s and 1960s, a number of which won Oscars for special effects. Included in Pals filmography are the minor cult classic Destination Moon, When Worlds Collide (1951), The War of the Worlds (1953), Houdini, Conquest of Space, The Time Machine (1960), Atlantis, the Lost Continent (1961), The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962), 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964), and Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975). At the time of his death, Pal left manu unfinished and unreleased projects, some of which were completed and released posthumously. 1924 – Richard Hooker, American writer and surgeon, whose most famous work was his novel MASH (1968), based on his experiences during the Korean War and written in collaboration with W. C. Heinz. It was later used as the basis for a critically and commercially successful movie (1970) and television series (1972–1983). 1940 – Bibi Besch, Austrian-American actress who played Dr. Carol Marcus, the early love of Admiral James T. Kirk in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. She received an Emmy nomination in 1993 for her recurring-character role as the neurotic mother of Janine Turners character in Northern Exposure. 1942 – Terry Jones, Welsh actor, director, and screenwriter best known as a member of the Monty Python comedy team. 1946 – Elisabeth Sladen, English actress best known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who. She was a regular cast member from 1973 to 1976, alongside both Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, and reprised the role many times in subsequent decades, both on Doctor Who and its spin-offs, K-9 and Company and The Sarah Jane Adventures. 1957 – Renae Jacobs, American voice actress best known for voicing April ONeil in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series.
