Interesting tidbits about Ethiopia on this date on October 22 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- --- International Stuttering Awareness Day (International) - October 22 --- Today hosts the birthday of the late Ethiopian Artist Afewerk Tekle, born on this date on October 22, 1932. Tekle, considered the most celebrated of contemporary Ethiopian artists, studied mining engineering in England before entering the school of art. In 1958 Tekle stained glassed the windows in the Africa Hall of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa. The three windows cover an area of 150 square meters, and represent the sorrow of Africas past, the struggle of the present, and hope for Africas future. In 1964 he became the first laureate of the Haile Selassie I Prize for Fine Arts. As his reputation spread abroad, his works appeared among places, the Royal Chapel in the Tower( Altar cross (1959) of London, England. Tekle passed away on April 10 ,2012 (Source: Wikipedia) --- On this date on October 22, 1964, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie welcomed to Addis Ababa Germany President Heinrich Lubke and his wife at a state dinner. The Emperor is quoted saying: In the short time that you will spend with Us, Mr. President, you will have the opportunity to come to know at first hand of the beauty and rich potential of the Ethiopian nation. You will see at first hand something of the proud heritage and culture of Our country and experience the traditional hospitality which the Ethiopian people extend to those whom We respect and honour. You will, We are confident, come to understand and appreciate the fierce desire of the Ethiopian Government and people for progress and improvement. You will see what vast wealth resides in the fertile soil and the great watersheds of Our nation. When you take leave of Us, We hope that you will carry away with you warm and lasting memories of the friendship which unites the Ethiopian and German peoples as well as a practical knowledge of the problems which face Our nations so that relations between Us will continue to be characterized by that candor and mutual appreciation which has been their hallmark in recent years. --- On this date on October 22, 1963, the New York Times reported that Algeria had rejected a proposal mediated by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie who was in the Algerian capital helping end a border conflict between Algeria and neighboring Morocco.
