Intermediate Football League (Round Six) Carrickmacross 0.11 Donaghmoyne 1.07 The Fontanoys made the short journey to Emmet Park on Sunday where a large crowd had assembled for this top of the table clash with the Emmets; in the Intermediate League. Carrickmacross were on a run of four consecutive wins while Donaghmoyne had only lost one-point in the champagne to date! The first thing that both teams had to overcome was the elements; heavy showers had made underfoot conditions precarious for fast football and the pitch was cutting up as the game progressed. From the throw-in the Emmets were on the attack straight away and Killian Cromwell had a goal effort diverted for a 45 in the first minute; Stephen Gollogly then pointed the first score of the game for the Emmets; Donaghmoyne settled down and after two attempts went wide they got on the scoreboard through Rory Woods from a free-kick. After another wide ball for Donaghmoyne Darren Colman and Stephen Gollogly exchanged points to keep matters level; James Conlon landed a hard-earned point for the Emmets but Darren Colman again equalised for the visitors. A further wide for Carrickmacross was quickly forgotten as Stephen Gollogly pointed from a free-kick and Peter O’Hanlon sliced the post with a beauty to register his first point. Pauric Donaghy pulled one back for Donaghmoyne but the strong work of James Conlon paid dividends as he fisted over to restore the two point advantage for the home side. As the last ten-minutes loomed Donaghmoyne missed a scorable chance when the ball went wide of the target but Niall Gartlan made amends with well-worked point! The last five minutes belonged to Carrick as they sought to add to their tally and four efforts yielded two points from Stephen Gollogly one from a free-kick and one from play; with the other two attempts ending wide of the intended objective. As the first half ended the rain started; the spectators scurried for cover with the Emmets leading by seven points to five. The second half commenced without the rain and the Emmets showed the early pace but were impeded by poor shooting and missed the opportunity to show some daylight between the sides with two scorable chances lost; although Peter O’Hanlon converted a free-kick to extend their lead! Donaghmoyne were also struggling with their shooting and prior to Rory Woods scoring from another free-kick they also missed from a scorable position. Two more wides from Emmets and two from Fontanoys did nothing for the game but when Darren Colman saw an opening after the Carrick defence left the gate open; he seized on the opportunity and rattled the Emmets net for an equalising goal! Ten minutes to go and all to play for; Donaghmoyne had a bad effort wide of the post while another free-kick from Stephen Gollogly restored the Emmets to the front. At this point as the finishing line was in sight; the visitors wasted three more efforts while shooting wide under pressure; subsequently both sides exchanged free-kicks with Stephen Gollogly and Rory Woods posting a point apiece. The last throw of the dice came to Donaghmoyne in the form of a forty-five; which according to the referee had to be scored direct to level the match; however Rory Woods although finding direction but not distance saw the ball fall short to the sound of the imminent full-time whistle! A game dominated by poor shooting but nevertheless entertaining and we were treated to an hour of honest endeavour and commitment by both sets of players playing under extreme conditions! The Emmets defence; despite the one lapse; were superb for the second game in row; conceding little and marking diligently; midfield held their own; up front only two players made the scoreboard on a poor day for forwards! Donaghmoyne for their part will probably regret too many missed opportunities which explains the modest return for all their effort! The result means that the teams exchange places in the division with the Emmets now in pole position.
