International End Obstetric Fistula Day calls for an end to the suffering of 2 million women...women like Isatu. #EndFistula Isatu is 17years old and lives in a small village called Makinde in the Tonkolili district. She lived with her father and step-mother since her mother stays in Guinea. Their main occupation was farming. Her father forced her into marriage to an older man, threatening her that if she refused he would disown her. She had no option but to consent. So at the age of 14, Isatu became the second wife of her husband. The bride price was 20 gallons of palm wine and an undisclosed amount of money paid to her father. She lived with the husband for two years before conceiving. During the pregnancy she attended ANC regularly until she was term. Then she went to stay with her grandmother at Makinde who is a known TBA. She was in labour for two days but could not deliver the baby so she was taken to the Government hospital at Tonkolili, where she finally delivered a stillborn (a boy). Immediately after delivery she noticed that she was leaking urine. Even though her husband was informed that she was in labour, he never visited her neither at the grandmother’s house nor at the hospital. AWC was contacted and she was brought in by the screening team. Surgery was done for a VVF. Isatu is now almost always dry and is making great progress towards total recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Isatu. Can you help us help other women, just like her.
