International Peace & Conflict Film Festival—Presented by KU’s five area studies centers Wednesday, September 25, 5:00 pm Spencer Museum of Art Auditorium MACHUCA (2004) Presented by the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies Set in Chile, 1973, this is an astonishingly intimate and painful coming-of-age story about a pair of 12-year-old boys from opposite extremes of society who form an unlikely friendship during the last days of President Allende’s term and the first days of Pinochet’s. The potent events are accompanied by a searingly beautiful soundtrack with heart-stopping beats that propel the drama of the story. (121 min.) Introduction and discussion after the screening will be led by Verónica Garibotto, Assistant Professor, Department of Spanish and Portuguese.
