International Save The Vaquita Day is Saturday, July 12, 2014 Save The Whales will be hosting the day with family activities at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center, Santa Cruz, CA montereybay.noaa.gov/vc/sec/welcome.html The purpose of the day is to bring attention and awareness to the critically endangered vaquita, the smallest porpoise in the world. The dwindling population, estimated at around 150, lives in the northernmost part of the Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico. They are being killed as bycatch in gillnets set for shrimp and fish. At the Sanctuary Exploration Center, Save The Whales’ staff and volunteers will be present to discuss vaquita history. Displays will include informational brochures, vaquita videos, crafts for children, a children’s contest, a life-size newborn vaquita model, and a petition. The goal for Save The Vaquita Day is to get more attention for the little porpoise and bring it back from its Critically Endangered status. There is no other vaquita population. If stronger efforts to save it are not made, it will be extinct in a few short years. Other Save The Vaquita Day celebrations by organizations and aquaria will be held in other U.S. cities, Mexico and China. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center opened two years ago. Just steps away from the ocean and famed Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
