International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Vacancy: COMMUNICATIONS AND RESEARCH UPTAKE SPECIALIST Kathmandu, Nepal The person and the job: The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a Communications and Research Uptake Specialist who has the ability to assist the Institute in achieving impact from its scientific research results. The person should also be motivated to creating a positive impact on people’s lives and the environment in Nepal. We need an experienced person to work with our researchers to set up projects that will be taken up by policymakers, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and community groups, and have a real impact on sustainable development. The position holder will work with the Head of IWMI’s office in Nepal to drive a country-wide strategy for better land and water management. Consistent with the strategy, the position holder will coordinate communications and research uptake activities, and develop materials that address the needs of different audiences in Nepal, to increase the chances of achieving development impact. Monitoring and evaluating the progress made towards communications and research uptake goals, and ensuring that details from this are fed back into program implementation and strategy, will be important. The position holder should also be able to help create an impact culture within the organization, and build knowledge on uptake tools and approaches that are appropriate for a scientific research organization. The position holder will be based in IWMI’s office in Kathmandu, Nepal and report to the Head of Office. The person will also receive direction and support from the Director, Communications and Marketing, Information and Knowledge Group (IKG), and the Coordinator for Research into Impact (Asia), in developing IWMI’s strategies and campaigns for Nepal that are consistent with corporate guidelines. You will: • contribute to the preparation of project proposals to ensure in clusion of clear communications and uptake strategies, and acti vities; • facilitate the process of developing and implementing communications and uptake strategies for individual projects that are al ready ongoing; • work closely with the Head of Office, IWMI Nepal to develop and implement national and sub-national communications and uptake strategies, which will help to identify key target research users and connect messages across projects that are relevant for these users; • work with research staff to develop communications products and uptake messages that address different research audiences, and identify the most appropriate dissemination channels for different products; • help to organize, coordinate and take part in events held by IW MI (conferences, workshops, launches, etc.); • ensure that communication material and uptake plans are in place to maximize impact; • monitor and evaluate the progress made towards communications a nd research uptake goals, and ensure that details from this are fed back into program implementation and strategy, and communicated widely; and • work closely with IWMI’s Information and Knowledge Group (IKG) and the Global Science Uptake Coordinator to align communications and uptake strategies for the Institute in the region and globally. You must possess: • a master’s degree in mass communications, journalism, international development, sociology, economics or a related field; • at least 5-10 years of relevant professional and applied experience; • experience in writing on scientific and development issues; • experience of developing and implementing communications and/or uptake strategies, including policy dialogue and stakeholder engagement platforms; • experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders, including development donors, private industry, local communities, NGOs, government officials, research organizations, etc.; • experience of working with, and developing, modern social media tools such as the web, blogs, twitter, wikis, etc.; • experience of working in Nepal; • fluency in English and Nepali; • strong interpersonal and networking skills; • excellent written and oral communication skills; • production experience in electronic media such as video or audio; • facilitation skills and experience; • the ability to work as part of a team with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds; • a high degree of innovation, originality and creativity; • a strong analytical mind, with the ability to synthesize and communicate persuasively; and • the willingness to travel within the region and, if necessary, to other regions. It would be useful if you had: • knowledge of agricultural and water management issues in Asia; • a good understanding of the water-energy nexus issues; • work experience in developing countries; and • a proven record of relevant peer-reviewed articles in international journals, where the applicant is the first author This is a nationally recruited staff position and only Nepal citizens are encouraged to apply.
