Internet training would cut pensioner loneliness, says think tank: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-27577143 Comment from Trevor Lyttleton MBE, Founder and Chairman of Contact the Elderly: “Contact the Elderly has been dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation in older people for almost 50 years. In that time we have learnt a lot from our tea party guests and we know that suggesting that a move online is not the whole answer to the desperate problem of loneliness in the UK for everyone aged 75 and older. “The majority of older people grew up in an age where computers and the internet had not even been considered. The thought of going online is often terrifying, rather than comforting. What the million neglected older people off the radar want is hugs, face to face contact and the spark of human company and friendship. “We have a waiting list of hundreds of would-be guests, for whom access to our tried and tested solution would cost a fraction of the estimated £875 million earmarked for providing digital skills.”
