Interstellar: A+ Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.-Dylan Thomas Plot: Earth has had it with humanity. Blight affects almost every crop. Nations no longer have armies, but focus solely on feeding their populations. The most needed industry is farming. In despair, NASA has been secretly working to find humanity a new home. Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is a former astronaut and engineer who now runs a farm as there is no need for men with his training. He is tasked by NASA to pilot the last hope of humanity through a black hole that leads to another galaxy and possibly habitable worlds. He leaves behind a daughter and son in the care of their grandfather and a vague promise of returning. Review: It has been a long while since I watched a film that was so completely engrossing in both massive set pieces and quiet, human moments. I was riveted the entire 3 hour run. The poem above is mentioned several times in the film to push the characters to not give up hope despite being faced with the extinction of humanity in the not at all distant future. The heart of the film, a daughter trying to forgive and reconnect with her father against insurmountable odds is heartbreaking. The science that the film holds strongly to, while still theoretical today, is visually stunning and equally foreboding. The spirit of exploration beyond our world is sorrily missed in our culture today and this film will resonate with those who still look to the skies and wonder our place in the universe as well as what is out there for us to discover. If you can, watch this in IMAX. It is breathtaking and definitely worth it.
