Interviewing - Its Not What You Think -Be positive You might be thinking, Why would I not be positive in an interview? But you might be surprised at how easy it is to fall into a negative story. We all have things happen in our work that we might describe as negative - maybe weve been fired, been laid off, been on hundreds of interviews without an offer, had a terrible boss, quit a job at an unethical company, been injured on a job... and of course the list could go on. These subjects come up very easily during interviews when were asked, why were looking for something different, why weve made changes in the past, asked to share a challenging situation and how we dealt with it, or maybe the person conducting the interview knows of a negative person or situation in our past and opens the door and invites us into negativity by speaking that way themselves. Never walk through that door. Keep things positive, especially if you feel you have a good reason to feel negative - either about your current situation or something you may have been part of previously. Nothing will send an interview south faster than negative talk about other employers. Even if youve been invited to go there by the person interviewing you - just dont. Instead, simply tell the truth about it calmly and without sarcasm in a sentence or two, and then tell them something positive you took away from it. Briefly explain why it was a good learning experience for you, and why it will make you a better employee for the opportunity youre interviewing for. Take advantage of every opportunity you can to let them know what you bring to the table for them. This is incredibly powerful Stuff happens - in life and at work :) Often these things are completely unforeseen and are really no fault of our own. However, Even if we have made a mistake, we never need to play the victim in these situations. They dont need to define us and color our lives, relationships and interviews... You CAN make the choice to see things differently, to see things as they really are and to go soaring past positive and all the way to the benefit of all.
