Introducing... Albus! (Yes, like Dumbledore. That beard, you know...) Recently, we were alerted to a goat in a remote animal control facility. Some children looking for their lost dog on the side of an expressway heard a strange sound and decided to follow it. The sound ended up being Albus here, who had been tied by his horns to a tree on the side of the expressway and abandoned in the hot sun. The kids and their parents called their local animal control to come pick him up, but unfortunately, as goats arent exactly the typical animal who finds their way to the shelter, they werent equipped to care for him and needed to find him a place to go within three days, or theyd have to euthanize him. By the time we at EARTH got wind of the fact that he was there, it was ten-thirty in the morning on the day of his scheduled euthanasia (at 3 p.m.). Since the facility was quite a distance from us, we looked for a transporter more local to the area, but since the clock was ticking, ultimately decided not to waste any more time and dropped everything to start driving to rescue him. We got to the facility with 33 minutes to spare. :-) We dont know who could possibly have abandoned Albus the way they did, but our suspicion is that he came from a local goat dairy and was no longer wanted. No matter how he ended up tied to that tree, were very grateful that he was discovered and that ultimately he found his way to us. Albus has been very affectionate and sweet from the moment we met him, but, he was also a bit rambunctious at first, since, well, he was full of testosterone. Though he really only intended to be playful, as were not goats, sometimes he played a little too rough for delicate human rib cages. ;) So, the day after his rescue, we brought him in to see our friends at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and after a thorough physical exam, he had surgery to be neutered. Post-neuter, his sweet affectionate nature has dominated his rambunctious side, and while hes still playful (he IS a typical male goat, after all), the play is at just the right level to still be fun without fear of anyone getting hurt accidentally. Albie loves to be petted, he adores having his head and neck scratched, and will come lay down next to you in the straw for a full massage whenever possible. He trails us everywhere we go, happily trotting along hoping to see and help with whatever were doing (especially if it involves cleaning up any spilled food), and he has a new penchant for vanilla cookies at snack time. Most importantly, hes safe, and he and Alfie are becoming friends quickly. They sleep together in the straw every night and Alfie follows Albus around, watching and learning from his older pal exactly how to be a goat. Were so happy to welcome him to join our animal family, and we cant wait for you all to come visit him at our Grand Opening at the end of the month. Welcome to EARTH, Albus! Welcome home.
