Introducing Tansy Sadly, this sweet girl is very ill and her - TopicsExpress

Introducing Tansy Sadly, this sweet girl is very ill and her prognosis for full recovery is poor. She was found in a yard, Sept. 8th, in obvious distress. Because she looks so much like a cottontail, she was brought to SaltHaven Wildlife Centre. Upon arrival in triage she was unable to use her hind legs, had a pronounced head tilt, discharge from one eye and multiple scabs, and wounds. It was suspected she was either hit by a car or mauled by a cat or dog. (After the passage of time and more information it seems it was probably a dog.) Tansy has made progress while at SaltHaven regaining some use of her hind legs and a lessening of the headtilt. However, she is very thin with a very poor body condition and muscle wasting. Scabs still cover her frail body. As I run my hands over her I can feel jutting bones and dried clumps of scab and fur. Tansy is still very neurological, uncoordinated, has great difficulty getting about(she lurches and falls over) and spends most of her time facing a corner with her head pressed down against the bedding or against the side of the cage bottom. (Head pressing is probably indicative of brain trauma/damage.) Her pupils are very dilated but respond, albeit slowly, to bright light. With the realization that Tansy is likely a domestic rabbit she was transferred to Dancing Rabbit Refuge. She will require long term rehabilitation and car. For now my goal is to provide medical and nutritional supportive care while Tansys brain and body recover from their injuries. And, time. As much time as she needs. She is nibbling a little on her own and accepting syringe feeding of Critical Care. She is also receiving subQ fluids, antibiotics, pain and anti-inflammatory medications, and meds to help with dizziness. She is managing to retrieve her cecals but is incontinent so needs frequent bedding changes to keep her clean and dry. She also has a Snuggle Safe heat disc to make sure she is warm enough. I would like to thank the staff and volunteers at SaltHaven for taking such fabulous care of Tansy and then entrusting her ongoing care to Dancing Rabbit. SaltHaven operate with professionalism and great compassion. Ive no doubt they saved Tansys life. BTW - Tansy is a beautiful yellow wildflower found in Ontario and as a namesake means immortal. If you would like to help with Tansys care and medical expenses please PayPal to dancingrabbitrefuge@rogers Thank you. Here are a few pictures. She has difficulty holding her head up and is so tired today, after yesterdays car ride and change of environment.
