Inventing the invisible..... We humans like to think were pretty special: everything revolves around us. Or, at least, thats how people thought until Dutchman Antonie van Leeuwenhoek developed the microscope in the 17th century, and promptly discovered *microorganisms* such as bacteria and red blood cells. You could say that Leeuwenhoek was the first person to see the things inside things - and to understand that what we can see is only a tiny fraction of everything around us. Heres a lovely animated film about his life and work that was published a few months ago by HHMI. Its a great piece of work and a shame so few people have watched it!
