Investment Banking August 20, 2013, Bank of America Intern in London Dies By MARK SCOTT LONDON – A 21-year-old intern at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Moritz Erhardt, has died after collapsing at his student accommodation in London. Mr. Erhardt, a German citizen who was an exchange student at the University of Michigan, was found unconscious by British police and paramedics on Aug. 15, and was pronounced dead at the scene in East London. A spokesman for the British police added that Mr. Erhardt’s death was not being treated as suspicious, and an inquest would be held to determine the cause of death. Unconfirmed reports on social network forums suggested that Mr. Erhardt had worked through the night on three consecutive times as part of his internship. Bank of America declined to comment on the claim that he had been overworked. John McIvor, a Bank of America spokesman, said the firm’s thoughts were with the family of Mr. Erhardt, who was finishing a degree in business administration at the Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany. “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Moritz Erhardt’s death,” Mr. McIvor said in a statement. “He was popular amongst his peers and was a highly diligent intern at our company with a promising future.” Along with his internship in the investment-banking unit at Bank of America, Mr. Erhardt also had carried out similar placements at Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley and KPMG Consulting, according to his profile on the social network Seelio. His death came just before Mr. Erhardt was expected to complete his internship at Bank of America, whose London offices are located in the heart of the British capital near St. Paul’s Cathedral.
