Invitation and Reply : *I wrote this poem today. This is in a way an imitation of Wordsworths Expostulation and Reply* “Why Nishant, in this dreary place, You sit like melancholy’s child, Why Nishant, pray do make haste! The company calls you to delight, The food is set, the music plays, The stage is set and wide, Is life not a capricious lot? The girls search you with alluring eyes, “ Thus a ferreting visitor came, To seek me in my haven blest, The drunken lord his nose did blow, To take me along; made request. And thus I replied: My noble fellow, the stage indeed is set, The tall and short are well attired, The fat and thin are illustriously dressed, To steal many hearts, the maidens conspire, But the wide world is not wide enough, For our eyes run out of things to see, Our tongues run cloy on breathless speech, Must we still dependent on outward be? I see the skulls beneath the skin, I see the hollows of the eyes, My lord, heed and you will listen, Under gluttonous laughs, the cries! Then ask no more, I bid thee leave! And uninvade my haven blest, I seek not that thing in world outside, That waits in solitude’s passiveness. - Nishant Sharma | 25th August, 2014
