Inward Prosperity vs. Outward Prosperity The Elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth: Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” ~ III John 1: 1- 4 At the time of the writing of the verses above, John is the last surviving Apostle of Jesus Christ, making him the most revered and respected figure in the church. His words were no doubt inspired by God, and, to this day, provide incredible clarity in what seems to be very confusing times. John addresses this letter to Gaius, whom he loved and cared for greatly. He would later commend Gaius for his hospitality, but what is even more significant than that is: John encouraged Gaius to have a healthy and prosperous soul. Sadly enough, this is the polar opposite of many teachings today. The popular winds of preaching and writing these days focuses upon Outward Prosperity. While there is nothing wrong with desiring success, making it the main theme in your relationship with God will eventually prove to be destructive at best. Rather the main thread woven throughout Scripture, like in John’s letter, is Inward Prosperity. God is far more interested in who you are than what you have. Hes more concerned about who you become rather than what you achieve. His desire is that your soul would prosper. Meaning that your character becomes more like that of Jesus Christ. This inward prosperity also includes an increase in Biblical wisdom, peace, discernment, knowledge, hope, faith, and love. These are the true riches of heaven on earth. Understanding this truth of Inward Prosperity is key to having a Spirit Led walk with God. I would go as far to say that to focus on outward prosperity is futile to your faith not to mention foolish.
