Iodine for thyroid health- iodine is a trace mineral which many people are deficient in. It is very important for healthy thyroid health and a deficiency can lead to poor thyroid function. However, TOO much iodine is also problematic for the thyroid, so it is wise never to self prescribe iodine or consume lots of iodine through your diet without knowing where your iodine levels are at ( particularly if you have an autoimmune thyroid condition). How do you test for iodine deficiency/excess? A urine sample will show how much iodine your body is excreting which can indicate deficiencies or excesses. Food sources of iodine are: seafood, kelp and other seaweeds, iodised salt, bread made with iodised salt, some dairy and vegetables grown in iodine rich soil ( unlikely in Australia). Iodine is especially important during pregnancy for foetal brain development and is important also for fertility. Most multivitamins contain small amounts of iodine, so this is something to be mindful of if you have a thyroid condition which may be made worse by excess iodine..
