Irish place names in Scotland "Scotland" translates as the "land of the Irish"!!! Over the centuries the Scots and the English have attempted to disavow the Irish heritage of Northern Britain for political reasons and to break the common family ties and allegiances which straddled Sruth na Maoile (the North Channel). The Irish word for family is "clan" and each clan supported other branches of the clan no matter what side of the channel they happened to reside on. This of course included military support, hence the English zeal at disrupting such relationships. Military support worked both ways and in Ireland, Scottish mercenary warriors were known as the Gallowglasses (gallóglaigh). Placenames are highly resistant to change and the Irish placenames in Scotland stand as testament to the existence and prevalence of Irish influence on the people.
