#IrishWater So Denis OBriens media machine are getting ye olde dissidents and anarchists story dusted off and circulated throughout national broadcasters and papers. It hasnt really come as a surprise to any of us whove been involved in past community campaigns that became a threat to the interests of the establishment. If the Garda violence that has been seen and felt in recent days is to be justified, there must, of course, be a sinister force that is provoking it. Obviously our police force wouldnt just beat and pepper spray the public because we are protesting effectively, right? State and corporate media insist, clumsily, that there are shady dissident IRA forces initiating violent confrontations with Gardaí. These unseen forces dont care about anything other than causing trouble or accumulating power were told. That a search on YouTube for videos of said trouble contradicts this narrative and in fact clearly shows that the Gardaí are the source of any violent incidents is irrelevant. The media have a job to do. That job consists of building a climate of fear around protests, attempting to divide protesters into Good and Bad groups and then to justify Garda assaults on the public by retroactively labeling the victims as dissidents or anarchists, i.e. Bad protesters. The point is to scare us into silence and inaction. So any of us who are engaging in effective protest, or who have been assaulted by Gardaí are characterised as a sinister fringe. The irony of this narrative is striking considering the fact that an actual fringe interest is not only behind the installation of water charges but is also behind the media and just happens to be well connected within the State too. This interest is of course Denis OBrien, the billionaire who, through his acquisition of Siteserv, won the water meter installation contract. Its worth noting that his acquisition of Siteserv was through Anglo Irish Bank/IBRC and cost the taxpayer €100 million. Despite all of this, we can rest assured that not only will his peons in Irish media outfits fail to accuse him of being sinister, theyll probably fail to mention Denis at all. Sinister fringe? You might think that, we couldnt possibly comment ...
