Traditional characters, which are mainly used in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, are also an important part of the region’s culture. If Foshan has to completely adopt simplified characters, it could mean that some monuments in the city will have to put up new plaques on their front doors, switching the characters from “祖廟” (ancestral temple) to “祖庙”.
