Is everyone aware that there is a new NIV? I know that a lot of us at Cornerstone have switched over to the ESV. But for those of you out there that are still die-hard NIV fans like me, you should be aware of the changes that have been made in your translation. I heard about the original NIV back in 1984 when it first came out. I had been impressed by an article that spoke of a brand new scholarly translation that went back to the original manuscripts and put it into modern language. I immediately went out and bought my first study bible. I’ve had it now for 30 years. I love the NIV 1984! I love the way it flows when one reads it. They managed to keep the poetry of the psalms and other books of the OT sounding like poetry and reading like the classical works that they are while maintaining the accuracy and staying true to the original language. It is my opinion that no other translation has achieved this as well as NIV 1984. I know ESV and NASB and maybe one or two others are more faithful to be a word for word translation, but for the perfect balance of thought for thought accuracy, poetry, readability, and inspiration my choice is NIV. Of course that’s just me but I know there are others who grew up memorizing scriptures from that translation and feeling just as strongly about it. Now Zondervan is killing the NIV. They came out with a new translation that reads very differently. It’s the NIV 2011. But instead of having both a 2011 and a 1984 like NASB did when they revamped their translation, they pulled all the 1984’s off the shelves ordered biblegateway and all other online search programs to discontinue displaying 1984 NIV’s. I had downloaded NIV bible app to my phone to read. One day when I updated my apps they changed my version!! I had to send an email complaint to get them to change it back. I downloaded a go-bible app for my phone so I could listen to it with my earbuds at work or whenever I want. But it was the hated 2011 version. It is impossible to get the 1984 because Zondervan owns the copyright and won’t allow it. With all their gestapo tactics, I’m surprised Zondervan doesn’t stage a public book burning. But then again… I’m not surprised. Because they want you to think it’s the same version. It’s no longer called NIV 2011. It’s just simply called the NIV. But it’s different. The first time I read it I put it down because it left a bad taste in my mouth. It’s not as bad as some translations that should go right into the trash can, like the NWT. But I find some of it disturbing. One thing that stands out is how they go out of their way to use gender-neutral language. Here’s one example… Psalm 8:4 NIV 1984 “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:4 NIV 2011 “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” Anybody see a problem there??? I’m getting a brand new study bible for Christmas. I doubt they’ll be available next year.
