Is it a man-made disaster??? Partially, yes. Probably, a disaster of this magnitude could have been reduced to a smaller one. Do you know how many dams/hydro-electric projects have come up in last few decades, are coming up and will be coming up in a small state like Uttarakhand (UK)? I got to know that there are about 110-120 new projects sanctioned. I got some info which I am sharing with you. Alakananda river - 37 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaknanda_River) Bhagirathi river - 18 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhagirathi_River#cite_note-Dams.2C_Rivers_.26_People-3) Yamuna and other tributaries of these rivers also host several such projects. Details of the Hydro-electric projects in UK could be obtained from this website... uttarakhandjalvidyut/details.php?pgid=86&type=03c7c0ace395d80182db07ae2c30f034 In addition to these dams, presence of mining and timber mafias led to massive deforestation and massive soil erosion. Is this present problem due to the damage inflicted on the ecosystem by urban population? Do the people living in those remote places really care about these so-called developments? Are we (Govts. and urban population) making their lives and also our lives vulnerable?
