Is police brutality a problem? Yes. Is the over militarization of the police a concern? Probably. Do racism and bigotry exist in law enforcement? Surely, tho probably not as widely as some might proclaim. Are those problems helped by choosing thugs as the poster children for police abuses? Not in my opinion. Associating those very real issues to the deaths of thuggish young black men will not encourage the rest of society to champion reform. Society will, instead, begin to believe that all police victims are actually just victims like Brown and Martin; young black thugs who ignorantly brought fists to a gun fight and lost. In the process, the actual victims, children shot by cops responding to 911 calls, children catching faces full of flash bangs in their cribs, gamers getting SWATd, will be ignored. Reforms are certainly needed. Reforms will not come as long as thugs are presented as innocents, gunned down by the system.
