Is this the future of ALL states? The percentages of net tax payers and net tax consumption have long interested me. The theory of the welfare state has long rested, as near as I could make out in my early studies, on the idea of the fortunate many paying for an unfortunate few. It becomes much more difficult to sustain when the few pay for the many. Demographic issues thus become paramount. And changes in population, and in tax payer/tax consumption category participation, matter a whole lot. Why this is not often discussed in public policy, and in debates about ideology, I dont really understand. But it does lead me to one of my pet notions, long held: the patron saint of the modern age is Saint Ponzi.
