Is this the kind of politics Singapore needs? "There is however a concern that his MPS could gradually and subtly undermine the dignity and stature of a parliamentarian’s office. If a letter written an ordinary citizen (albeit one with a membership and rank in a political party) is as effective and powerful as one written by a popularly elected official, it diminishes the worth and importance of our parliamentarians. It has to be conceded however that the MPS is not a creature of statute, and Mr Chua (Eng Leong) (or any other ordinary citizen) is indeed free to appropriate the practice to meet their own needs. However, there is another lurking concern about fairness. If an opposition party desires to do the same, would they face any constraints? Could they avail themselves of any public space to conduct their sessions? Furthermore, on a related concern, what capacity can they write in, and would these letters be given equal weight and consideration as well? It has been said that it is not the government’s job to help the opposition, but surely it is part of their task to be fair to their political opponents."
