Is this true, or is this simply hogwash, racial purity speaking or prejudice!? A statement such as this from the AG is irresponsible, divisive and highly inaccurate. What he is referring to are inter-religious marriages or those that have resulted when one party opts to change religion or convert (for spurious reasons) well into a previously same-race marriage, thereby creating these disputes. Some have actually claimed that such conversions of convenience (or connivance) were made with malafide in order to circumvent the issue of inheritance and child custody. Ive many friends who have married Malay spouses fully understanding the need to convert and these have been happy marriages that have lasted. Of course, some have failed too, with bitter disputes as to child custody but then the so-called relgiious undertones do not arise! In fact if there were no issue of religious conversions, I dare say that many Malaysians would have been happy to intermarry and made our Malaysian nation even more harmonised, blended and interconnected, certainly more truly Asian in appearance, culture and mannerisms!
