Is this where I lose some of my friends and family? I am (partly) of Scottish descent; my last name is Scottish. I am proud of that heritage. And...I sincerely hope that Scotland votes No this week. The impulse to tear things apart (rather than unite things) is an interesting one. But I think we as a people (the human race) need to have less that divides and more that unites. Demanding independence is quite valid when a people live under oppression. But the Scots would be hard pressed to make that case. And people are too quick to call things oppression when they are not; as when the southern states of the US claimed they were being oppressed when they were told to end segregation. And I believe that greater unity in the world calls for Scotland to remain in the UK...and for the UK to accept that it ought to be a fully integrated part of the European Union. And further...it is time that we (the people of the world including the US) recognized that we ought to be moving towards greater integration through the United Nations.
