Islanders playing in Edmonton tonight. Its like watching Team Canada playing Team Switzerland: no good can come of this. Any team can beat any other team on a given night, but no one gets to feel good about beating the Oilers. Even a narrow win will feel like a disappointment. A loss will lead to a Jonestown-like night on Long Island. Im just going to go to sleep early tonight and hope the Isles dont blow it. You cant let the Oilers be the team that prevents you from grabbing first overall (excluding loser points)! Dont feel too bad, Oilers fans. The worst they can do in the draft is a franchise player. Maybe their management will see this as an opportunity to move some assets to shore up the glaring weaknesses in their system. They seem to have recognized the fact that the rebuild will still take several more years -- same thing happened with the Isles. Rebuilding can be a long process, but if youre not contending, you should be building the system. (Having said all that, Im now sure that Im going to wake up to news of an Oilers blowout, and an epidemic of suspicious deaths in Uniondale).
