Islands Uncovered - Atiu What? There are more people on a London commuter train than there are on this whole island. What a thought. With only 500 inhabitants and hundreds of acres of untouched rainforest, there are only a handful of places left in the world that can compete with the secluded nature of this little treasure. It was once called Enuamanu – the land of the birds – and offers up much to explore for all you David Attenborough wannabies. What to do: Finding a secluded beach in Atiu is as easy as finding hay in a haystack. If you have to share it with someone else you are unlucky. , With most of the tourist accommodation lying on the raised hill in the centre of the island, all views are incredibly unspoiled. There is much more of an exploration interest on this island and guides will regale you with the history and culture of the natives and landscape. The spectacular limestone water caves provided by the uplifted reef give you an entirely different landscape and perspective to the island. The island also boasts its own coffee plantation and ‘bush beer’, which can be explored with the friendly locals and, after an evening sharing their home brew, you’ll feel like part of the extended family and leave chuckling from the stories of island life. Where to eat: Without much demand for restaurants on this Island, food is usually provided by your accommodation, but there are a couple of other places to get acquainted with the locals and indulge in traditional food and island festivity. Kura’s Kitchen at Atiu villas feels like an extended dinner party, with a two course meal nightly they welcome everyone if you book before 3pm as they cook for only who is coming. If demand is high enough they will also hold an Island night on reques. Teranguini cafe is the only other place where you can have island style breakfast or lunch, although you have to call ahead to make sure it is definitely open. Tis island life after all.
