Israelis, Egyptians Cooperate on Terror Wall Street Journal (08/14/13) Entous, Adam; Levinson, Charles Western officials say that Israel and Egypt are working together to deal with the threat from Islamist militants in the Sinai Peninsula. The cooperation between Jerusalem and Cairo was on display on Aug. 9, when Israel launched a drone attack against a militant group based in the Sinai that was believed to be planning rocket attacks on targets in southern Israel. However, Egyptian officials publicly denied that Israel carried out the drone attack, while their Israeli counterparts neither confirmed or denied involvement. The denial and the lack of confirmation about Israeli intervention in the Sinai may be part of an effort not to offend Egyptians who may be upset about an Israeli military operation in Egyptian air space. But Western officials say that the two countries have been increasingly cooperating with one another in combating militants since the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi on July 3. These officials say that Israeli and Egyptian security personnel discussed the threat from the militant group that was targeted on Aug. 9 as well as the options that were available for dealing with the threat. Meanwhile, the Egyptian military has been taking steps to address Israeli security concerns, including closing some of the tunnels that run between Egyptian territory and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
